  • Hell yeah, guys!!

I checked out that RC deal, neat, but probably not going that route. What I did see in that link was a wall mount. That's interesting.... might have to make something like that...🤔

  • Shadow box it.

  • Another totally off topic question for everyone here. We're looking to replace our 12 year old refrigerator. We found a very basic model that we really like. When I say basic model I mean an old school freezer over the fridge (not fancy side by side french doors and pull out freezers), with no front door ice or water. We like it because it is the largest model (24 cf) that will fit in our available space without me cutting the countertop or overhead cabinet. It's an LG refrigerator. Anybody have experience with LG appliances? Looking at online reviews it's never the exact same model number and I often think that only pissed off owners post reviews, not satisfied owners. LG? Yay or stay away? Thanks!

  • We had a fancy FY-2013 LG unit w/ double doors and every time the warranty expired the compressors would fail - 3 times in a row. I no longer buy LG appliances - low end Chinese junk compressors and electric components.

I have a FY-2005 Whirlpool Gold refrigerator here now going on 20 years without issue.

It's tough to find any good quality furniture or appliances any more as they all seem to be manufactured from the same internal components made off-shore.

I'd say the older the design, with less features, the more reliable it is likely to be. Less likely to be a one-off LG design.

  • We've used Fisher and Paykel, a NZ brand but made in Malaysia I think - one or two small issues but they've been very reliable and look good, with a brushed aluminium finish. We've had one fridge for 22 years, which is good for a modern appliance. The other is 12 years old, never a problem and the service is very good.

Way before that we had a 'Kelvinator' which was made of steel, circa 1960. The compressor was huge. but hopelessly inefficient. It must have weighed about half a ton.

LG used to be good quality when made in Korea (South, of course), not sure about now. Before selling stuff under their own brand they made appliances for several other labels.

  • I do know LG has had a ton of compressor failures. The Feds were even looking into it.

We bought a Maytag side-by-side maybe 5 years ago and it's been great. I think it was ~$1200. They are usually at least $100 more than the same Whirlpool model, but have a longer warranty. Maytag had a great sale on the model we wanted, so that made it a little less expensive than the competition. We bought it from a small, locally owned appliance dealer who has been very helpful - and honest about which models are reliable. They have the same pricing as the big box stores too.

  • We bought a fancy $ LG. Lasted just past the warranty period. Bought the cheapest side by side we could (w/ice maker) and no issues @~4yrs now.

  • Yeah, we're going to the small locally owned appliance store tomorrow.

We have one near us too. They are the best. Way better than the box store knuckleheads. They actually give a shit and know what they are talking about.

  • My sis and BIL have a big LG side by side fridge and their compressor went out about 3 years in too. No problems since, and they've had it 8 years.

  • Haven’t owned an LG refrigerator. But had a microwave at the old house- 0 problems. At the new place we originally had GE washer and dryer- washer worked once, dryer never. Replaced with LG front loaders and they are working great (about 3 yrs in). The GE kitchen appliances have no issues, and we put a GE refrigerator (simple, ie inexpensive) one in the basement.

  • We went to the local small appliance shop this morning. I'm going back tomorrow to pick up our new GE fridge that has a 10 year warranty. $150 more than the LG at the big box stores but it's exactly what we were looking for. Thanks for the feedback guys.

The wife and I were at Lowes inquiring about a Bosch cooktop display model on clearance and if they would mark it down lower. While he was gone I noticed how light it was. took off the grates and flipped it over to discover a sticker saying for display only. It had no internals and they didn't notice.

  • I had been running Parallels on my iMac and accessing work system remotely. Now with updated security they sent me a Dell laptop (won’t be using my personal iMac for work).

The downside is getting files / software re-setup on the Dell (and the small screen size). The GOOD news is I was able to download DATS (thought I might be restricted from downloading applications), and looking at using it for my next build.

Any of you guys ride electric unicycles? I've been enamored with the idea for the last year or so but don't want to pull the trigger on a $2k death trap until I talk to some one I know that's ridden one. Or preferably even sell me their used one. Nobody near me seems to ride them and the FB groups I've found and joined don't instill a lot of confidence.

Finally pulled the trigger on this during Black Friday. Scored this model for $1k:

This shit is life changing. I'm out in 30 degree weather going 25mph with a giant smile on my face the whole time. It's a very impressive piece of machinery, even at full price. The specs are wild and not overblown - 37mph top speed, 96 mile range, enough torque to off-road, etc. And this is a middling model. It's kind of unbelievable how stable they are once you get a feel for it. Highly, highly recommended for anyone considering it.

  • After listening to Lucinda Williams' Beatles collection, i had an optic/listen to her Dylan covers:

    Great versions, excellent band

Woo looks like a nice line of weather is setting up Sun-Mon. Seems like just a bunch of snow for us north of Cincy fortunately.

  • Come down here, it's 37C today and will be 38C tomorrow!

I would love to be able to ride one to and from work everyday but our city is not set up very well for that. I'd probably get nearly hit and killed by one or two A-hole drivers every day! Especially on the way to work when it's still dark out.

I don't fuck around in real traffic. Around me I can stick to bike paths, sidewalks and neighborhood streets easy enough to get to work. Don't have the stamina for an 8 mile trek yet though.

  • Those look really fun. I've always wanted to try something like that, but at my age (and weight!) I'm not sure I have the core strength to make it more than a block or two.

We do have some nice bike paths that the city has added in the last 5 years.
Unfortunately none of them go my way to work. I'd have to ride on one of our top 5 busiest, 45 mph, 4 lane roads. Ass hats drive 60, run red lights, and are mostly distracted on their phones. It would be like me playing Russian Roulette (no joke).

  • I've never tried a Unicycle to know that I could.

  • Interesting video about the guy behind the mixes at NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts. Not a lot of technical talk, but still interesting.
