    Clay, the Morel eggs rocked.

  • I have been told by people that the reason they use particle board for countertops is because it has a humidity expansion rate similar to plastic laminate.

  • OK, one people.

For those wanting to know the house tracks, here is the list below. I have not uploaded a file anywhere for download. I do have 4 discs left if anyone wants one. It contains both cuts and full length tracks.

1- Green Noise, from Coloured Noise set, short, snippet for setting level.
2 - Demi Lovato - Confident, from Confident on Island Records, short, used for fanfare and bass impact, very compressed.
3 - Independence Day - Darkest Day, from Independence Day Soundtrack on RCA, used for orchestral instruments and dynamics.
4 - Oscar the Grouch - Honk, Bang, Whistle, and Crash, from Oscar's Trashy Songs on Sony/CTW, short, used for high dynamics, fun, vaudeville banjo, and being a lesser quality recording.
5 - Fleming and John - Rain All Day, from Delusions of Grandeur reissue on Universal (REX), used for operatic voice, overlaid male/female vocals, fretless bass, soft shoe shaker, and high frequency triangle percussion.
6 - Apple IPhone - Flock, from Flock advertisement Youtube commercial, short, used for bad emboucher style flute, congestive city noises and good dynamics.
7 - R Kelly - Gotham City, from Batman and Robin Soundtrack on Warner, used for bass impact, R&B genre, male vocal.
8 - Ingrid Michaelson - The Way I Am, from Girls and Boys on Cabin24/Original Signal, used for hand claps, female vocal vibrato, and stand-up acoustic bass.
9 - Janis Ian - From Me to You, drums cover played by Steve Lee, short, used for requisite drum track. Thanks, Steve!
10 - Brandon Lakes with Jelly Roll - Hard Fought Hallelujah, from YouTube video because could not find single available for purchase, used for male vocal, dynamics, and gritty southern rock/country/gospel sound.
11 - Becoming the Archetype - Chapter II: Dimensions of Deliverance 4. The Calling, from Children of the Great Extinction on Solid State Records, short, used for heavy resonant low tuned metal guitar with metal drumming behind it.
12 - Eric Woodring - 80 Grit Down, from MP3 by the same name, deconstructed into industrial rock song from soundclip of revitalized 1981 Craftsman Belt Sander by Bill Schwefel, used for electric bass, and a lot of fun.

    Thanks for looking....

I'm glad everyone had a laugh with my track, especially thanks to Bill for putting up with my shenanigans. After hearing it a bunch more on various speakers, I felt the drums weren't quite loud enough in the mix. Here's a tweaked version. Let me know if anything else stands out and I can try to address. Enjoy!!

Ya, that was funny. Had to chuckle almost every time it played. Guess I'm now a rock star with a fully restored belt sander. B)

  • Thanks again to Ben and Chuck for putting on yet another great event. Takes alot of hard work each year to pull this off. I certainly appreciate it. Took tons of photos and will post a bunch in the next few days. It will take me a little longer to post pics this year because I bought a new camera phone and am still working through the bugs. Shot speaker pics in hi rez 50 mega pixel mode and captured presentation vids in hi rez 4K mode at 60fps. The high frame rate and video resolution are good enough to be used to pull still frames out that look almost as good as the hi rez still frame shots!

I'm also putting together a summary of each competition round and will post the results with pictures, names, drivers, etc. Congrats to @DaveFred for the win. Beautiful cabinet work and excellent sound.

  • Another random thought. Meredith's Omni was very cool and pretty much sounded the same anywhere in the room. I wonder if the point source tweeter had anything to do with it. 😂

  • Always so creative, pretty cool as usual.

I'm reviewing the concepts and drawings that Meredith presented. I'll post a project summary with pictures in the next few days.

  • I'll start off with a summary of the theme results. Congrats to @DaveFred for the win. Normally I ask the winner to pose for a picture next to his speaker, but I forgot (sorry, Dave).

  • All of them sounded good and similiar. Not one stood out or did something differently. Very difficult to pick one or the other. Sometime I voted with my eyes than ear... :astonished:

Some of them were surprising for what they were - The nightCaps had great bass and easily played with the big boys. Notable drivers which we tend to see less of in DIY gatherings - Fostex, Markaudio (2 of them), Kartesian.

Some of them have real potential either with a porper XO or with a small tweeter/XO.

  • What's the driver in the nightcaps?

  • Bill, thanks for the great posting of the competition. It made me feel like I was there.

John H, btw forum has decided I don't get emails
  • "Cabrini the Last" by JR. Drivers: GRS 8" woofer. Sealed with an f3 of 45Hz. Qtc of 1.0 with a nice mid bass kick. Dayton classic silkie tweeter. Designed by JR. The demo pair was built by Ken and then wheeled over to the event by Mark. Sounded really good. This speaker is available in kit form with CNC machined baffles from JFComponents.

  • "LCCAM 10.3" by Jim B. (HiFi Jim). Drivers: Dayton RS270 + SB15NBAC + SB26STAC. Active/passive low cost 3-way.

  • "Chunkers" by Tim R (Traw). Drivers: Satori WO24-4, SBCAC12-4, Wavecor ceramic dome tweeter. Xover roughly 400 and 2200Hz. Very detailed sound quality from these ceramic tweeters.

  • "Dayton 4 Deluxe" designed by Duane Brown/Dr Jay/Craig K. Built by Marvin S. Drivers: TCP115-4 woofer, ND16FA-6 tweeter. Amazing sound from such a small speaker.

"Ohm Walsh 5LE" by OEM. 1988-1990. 12" 2-way, 4 ohm. Owner: Martin S. Very heavy, lead lined cabinets. Ferrofluid in both the tweeters and woofers. Sounded much better than when they played at IowaDIY last year.

    6thplanetSteve_Leekenrhodes
  • "Talaria" by David H. (A4eAudio). Drivers: XT25SC90, RS100-8, RS180-8.

  • Mike has been given the list of 8 names as of yesterday. B&C Group is supposed to drop ship something to each of the 8. I already have phone numbers for all of you B&C recipients except for Clay and Meredith. Hopefully you or I will know something soon.

    ugly_wooferImpious
  • "Chubby Face Eggs" by Clay Eggguy. Drivers: Morel ST1108 tweeters and T1CW634nd woofers. Xover is 4th order at 1380Hz. The woofer is loaded into 3 spiral shaped transmission lines which have the same length but different taper ratios. Cool looking project. They sounded incredible from where I was seated.

    Steve_Leeugly_wooferrjj45hifisideGowa6thplanet
  • Amazing woodworking skills . . .

  • "Daleks" by Craig S. (PWRRYD): Drivers: JF-QA-Tiny_04 1" soft dome tweeter (12 per side) and Peerless 835004 woofers (4 per side). In the picture below, Craig is showing the microphone position that he used to develop the crossover. Standard two way type design with no shading (7 or 8 parts). Sound quality is very good sitting down, but the highs roll off a bit when you stand up. 93dB/1W/1M.

  • I might have entertained coming up Friday, but had a funeral to go to (yet again). I think I saw everything but I don't think I got to hear everything since some folks headed out early.

Unfortunately I'm 3hrs away, but (with Chuck playing less of a roll) I'd like to help however I can if there is a need in the future.

  • What an amazing job on those Chubby Face Eggs. Very cool.

    EDIT: Added builder's name.

Helios TX designed by Javad Shadzi and built by Eric. Satori Textreme woofer/tweeter and SB Acoustics PR. Cabinets are constructed of a constrained layer sandwich of 3/8" thick Katalox veneer + viscous damping material + 20mm thick German Panzerholz plywood. They are heavy; 86 lbs each.

Yeah I was cringing hard watching him cary those things out. Based on how he was describing their construction and how much he was leaning.

  • Vifa5 2 way with NE149 and NE25 drivers by Ani_101. Raspberry Pi programmed DSP in the cardboard box between the speakers. 6 Liter box with Fb of 63 and F3 of 54. Cool looking 3D printed blue BR port. Interesting choice of tracks for his personal demo!
