  • Dave, I wanted to tell you the Kartunes didn't sound 'weird' to me at all. The Kartesian had some panache or finesse to the details that others lacked. I was surprised it had such a deep cone profile, but this likely helped in acoustic center alignment.

Eric, I really liked your truckin' speakers. The bass was very good. The widerange was very agile and did quite well.

DaveH, I think the Mark Audio in yours were the most directional of the group, but I really liked the cabinet aesthetics. The woofers were very clean, as was the MA, but in the middle was considerably better on the top end.

Bill, it's amazing you can get that kind of bass sealed out of the 1139. I bet I've used that woofer a dozen times, and never thought a sealed box was worth the model. I've always vented it.

Tim, I liked yours a lot better after your component changes. I do want to point out though that mounting with steel machine screws and nuts is not preferable and will alter your inductance values.

Thank you all for bringing them!

  • Surprised no one used anything bigger than, what, 4"...4.5"?

    Looking forward to next year👍🏻

  • My Markaudio CHP-90 were (nominal) 5" (Sd=85cm2) with 7mm Xmax.
I also had the biggest woofers (10"). I was hoping the BWE (Big Woofer Energy) would help my entry out a little.

I’m a fan of the MA CHP-90 paper+ cone. Most broad / full rangers have but a fraction of it’s Xmax and it’s frequency extension.

I actually liked your full range the best.....even if it was small.

Hmm, "not the size, it's the motion"

But Chahly - Stahkist don't want speakers that look good, Stahkist wants speakers that sound good!
  • It was a great event. Thank you for organizing. Those Kartunes were great given the constraints. Always interesting to see the interesting design approaches people take. Whether non-commerical (everyone but especially Meredith's compression truly omni-directional driver), or the Walsh Ohm Model 5.

I put the design link for the R2D2s in this thread: https://diy.midwestaudio.club/discussion/2999/r2d2-tweeterectomy-theme-entry/p1?new=1

  • Okay, update on the B&C Group doorprizes. Mike has been busy doing something exciting, and this slipped his mind. I think I have most of the email addresses for those that chose this door prize direction, and will be sending Mike an email with those attached. I think Clay is the only person I don't have an email for. (@Eggguy send me a PM, please and thank you.) If you would rather I give him a different form of contact, please say so.

  • Has anyone heard from Mike about the door prizes?

  • edited June 26

Yes, he texted me a couple days ago, without me pinging him first, that they have just a little longer on that exciting thing to be finished, and then all will be contacted. I think all of you will see it is worth the wait. Unfortunately, I can't tell you what that is. I meant to post this yesterday...

  • In my very humble opine - there were several standout FR drivers used, and one not used.
    **Kartesian.

Surprise: small Daytons that drewsbrews used in the Nightcaps!

They were all 4's. Interesting. Maybe it explains why the most popular FR speaks are 4's, even with their SPL and bass limits.

I also think the Nightcaps won because they were a standard 0.5 arrangement and didn't try to integrate a larger driver. His drivers sounded alike and balanced. Integrating a large woofer to a smaller FR driver is apparently much more difficult than was expected. It "sounds" easy but isn't. Noted.

The one speaker that did IMHO most successfully integrate a large WF and FR deserves a callout.** IT2690**. Seamless transition to my ears.

    Cheers / Robert

Please note the IMHO's - I tend to like my bass very balanced and flat to the rest of the system FR. This is a taste thing, and often a tough decision at DIY's. Back in the day I tended to overbass a bit : P
