Hornresp help

  • Also, scroll up to see the drawing of my box. Kinda limited up top as there's a 6" PVC pipe for the mid.

Also, guess the math for the correct Mmd number needs to be done?
    ...and correct tuning.

  • Please do a WinISD vented box sim. Assuming I entered your driver T/S parameters correctly, it looks like that driver "wants" a larger box than 1.08ft^3. In general, as I detailed in the tutorial, it's always best to use a basic vented box sim to create a model. The Hornresp MLTL model then will use the same ported Fb, so you will have an accurate port area, port length, and Fb.

  • Yeah I did that at first, was trying to see if Hornresp would help locate the port as the enclosure isn't a simple shape.

  • Somehow I lost the Hornresp sim I was working on for you. I see 2 different volumes in your posts. WinISD shows 46.7 liters and your Hornresp sim shows 38 liters. Which is correct?

  • 46.7 I didn't realize in Hornresp to do the proper MLTL, you had to model the BR enclosure first. I was struggling to understand how to get the proper volume, my box shape, and port parameters to happen in that program.

  • Also still need to know if the bottom of the enclosure is to the right?

  • yes, bottom of the enclosure is to the right

  • Boy oh boy, your usual incredible woodworking ideas have created a whole lot of problems when trying to model in Hornresp! Let's try this. Because HR insists on putting the port to the right, we have to model sort of upside down. The left side in this case is the "big bottom", and the right side is the top (smaller).
Port placement is sort of default, I played with L12 a bit to smooth out some harmonics, but the S segments are close to 30-30-30 (cm).

And of course I think you have already found that you can adjust the "L" lengths to change the port location.
Moving the port "up", the FR looks like this (no filling):

    And with some filling:

    Looks pretty darn good!
For that sim, here is what the driver and port FR look like:

Just for grins, if we decided to put the port VERY close to the woofer, we get this:

And now we see why we never want to do that! Port output has significantly more upper harmonics "leaking"

Anything more you need, my friend?

  • Ok, so did you do a BR model first to get to that? I'm also seeing it wants the port right where the mid tunnel pipe is. Middle of the enclosure is probably not ideal, which is right below the mid pipe. I'll have to look, but I don't think there's enough room above the pipe, behind the tweeter.

Appreciate what you've done, thanks! I'll try to replicate this so I can play around. Any steps you did to arrive at that would be great.

  • I did a WinISD model a couple of days ago, but did not refer to it for this HR sim. Once I got your basic box dimensions close to your drawing, I just changed L23 to change the port location. I don't think it's very critical, you could probably move it up or down with very little change in overall FR.
PM me if you'd like, or we can continue in this thread.
Here is my exported HR model. Save it into "C:\Hornresp\Import\" then in Hornresp go to File-Import and it should be usable for you.

  • Got it, thanks again🤘🏼

Quick question, when entering Loudspeaker Wizard it asks "Mask chamber resonances?" I usually pick No, any reason I should?

  • TBH, I'm not sure what that means, but I always choose no. In our sims, for TLs or MLTLs, the rear chamber is pretty darn important to see what is going on. For something like a professional horn loaded loudspeaker, the rear chamber may be of very little importance.
