New project: The Muskies

edited July 22 in DIY

I know... not the greatest name for a DIY speaker project but I really suck at coming up with cool names for my projects. Muskie is a somewhat meaningful name though as the drivers for this 3 way are like that fish, hard to find. The paper 10" woofer, RS270P-4, is now NLA. The 6.5" midrange, PM180-8, is now NLA. The 1" corundum dome tweeter, DA25TX, is somewhat avaiable I think. Anyway it will be a big bass bin with a top MT cab. Lot's of pictures to come.

  • "The speaker of a thousand cuts," I like your name and can't wait to see the progress. Way better than "Esox"....

  • I really like that RS270P-4. It has better low end than the RS225 in a TL. I didn't make a huge enclosure either, You going to front mount or side mount it? I bought an extra some years ago in case one of mine failed. My enclosure was 12-7/8" Wide X 12-3/8" Deep X 18-5/8 Tall. That width allows for a 1" round over nearly touching the woofer (maybe 1/8" flat to the basket). All 3/4" material however the baffle is 1.25 or 1.5" thick. I can remember. I went with a 2" port ~ 6-3/8" long. A 3 inch would allow for more SPL without farting / port noises but wouldn't fit. I thought I remembered it was in the 102-108 range was when the 2" made noises so I figured I'm probably not listening much at that level LOL.

  • I posted this in Nick's thread. These are the MT boxes:

  • Having pursued the elusive fish I can get behind the name!
Look forward to seeing this build.

  • Those PM180 drivers are supposed to have very good sound quality - there was some use of them some years ago modified by slit cone technique. I've got a quad on the shelf now for a future project.

But Chahly - Stahkist don't want speakers that look good, Stahkist wants speakers that sound good!
  • I do plan on modifying my pair. Seriously hope I don't screw them up. Baffle rebates and through holes completed

You have a much greater tolerance to heat than I do. It's way too hot & humid for me to be doing much of anything outside today!

Being couped up all winter I'll tolerate it no prob! Get it while the gettings good!!

  • Better hot than cold.

  • Currently the bass bin is 38 liters and tuned to 34 Hz. I'm going to try a lower tuning frequency and see if I like how it sounds. Blue is how it models as is and pink is tuned to 28 Hz.

  • It'll probably be fine, you have to factor in room gain, so a mild roll off from a lower tuning usually works pretty well in real life.

Our dew point hit 81 yesterday. Even though I have router work on tap, I'd rather splay out in the basement and dream of shoveling snow.

  • Just clamped the baffles on:

I was able to flush trim the cabinets after work today. I realize they look really short and squatty right now. I think their proportions will look way better after I machine the 1-1/2" roundovers on the baffles' sides.

  • Is particle board easier to work with? Seems like alot of you have switched from MDF. The dust alone from MDF is worth switching away from it.

  • I use those stair treads exclusively for most builds now.

So my go to SpeakON 4 pole connectors and the recently 3D printed aperiodic vents...

  • I like the 3/4" thick particle board shelving. I grab some 11.5" wide x 48" long boards when they are on sale. They make saw dust instead of nasty powder....

  • Yes cleanup is definitely easier.

  • Clean up is important MDF dust gets everywhere. I moved recently and I promised Ashley, she would always be able to park in the garage. So I will likely have to setup most of the shop stuff in the basement aside from the table saw. The speakons are nice for doing crossover work.

  • I try always to use the router outside, even in the winter > a hoodie and thin work gloves (and a mask). And X winter, just roll the table saw outdoors.
