  • Surprised he lived that long, guy was in rough shape. Hell of a musician and song writer.

  • I sat and drank with him about 30 years ago. He was a total D-bag. I wish my GF at the time didn't know he/they were playing in town that weekend and she didn't recognize him at the bar we were at. She loved that era of music... He liked staring at her awesome clevage and talking like he was some sort of King of the World. She left with me but he might have actually hooked up with the 50+ year old bartender with the baby pooch and huge tits that she was rub'n up on him. I don't know if that was his drug addiction years or not but he sure could pound the hard alcohol and seemed overly amped up on something. Just my personal experiece with him.

  • I'm not a hater. It's just that all their songs sound the same to me and I hate that every car show I go to that's mostly all they have blaring on the crappy PA. Might be one reason the younger generation isn't too interested in going to car shows anymore. Not to mention that lion in the jungle song... rant off!

  • The Lion Sleeps Tonight was The Tokens, not Beach Boys.

    I have a signature.
  • Yeah I know it wasn't the BB's. Just another song that gets played 10 to 20 times a day at car shows around here.

  • Ah gotcha.

    I have a signature.
  • His was a contentious death, apparently . . .

  • He was a musical savant, warts and all. I like a few BB songs. I appreciate his musical talent. I love vocal harmonies. But I hate falsetto....

  • Sadly part of what sent Wilson into crippling depression was his failed attempt to change their sound because of others in the band and shelved over-ambitious Smile album that was ahead of its time. Can't really judge Wilson by the Beach Boys total output. It's all about the early albums through Pet Sounds and occasional splashes of brilliance afterwards. It's easy to take for granted because the hits have been played to death, in countless commercials etc. I got turned on to Wilson with the excellent documentary 'I Just Wasn't Made For These Times' (1995). There's a reason the Beatles revered him. No Brian Wilson, no Sgt. Pepper. The Smile sessions box set shows the Beach Boys that could have been ('Our Prayer', 'Surf's Up'). He was a genius on the bass and at the console that could have been another 60/70s casualty but persevered for another 40 years and influenced another generation, so good for him.

  • My first record was “Endless Summer” a double album that was basically a greatest hits. With some really bitchin cover art. Bday present when I was 11. Later, I met Al Jardine at his place in Big Sur, on a survey job. Probably 2004 or so. He was cool. Worked at Mike Love’s place in Pebble Beach as well, around the same time but never met him. It seems like there was a lot of litigation as to naming rights song credits etc. unfortunate.

  • I'm afraid if I met Mike Love, there might be a scuffle. One of my female friends in HS was a huge fan and he gave her tickets to their show in Chicago and then proceeded to bring her back to his hotel room after the show. She was a naive little 16 girl and he took advantage of her.
