New rules/categories for Ohio Speaker Design Competition / MWAF?

  • Looks like my Hancocks are barely over the $300 mark at $314 and come in under 2000 at about 1788in3, whereas the Pangolins come in at under $200 for drivers, and over the 2000 mark at about 2330in3. We'll see how many entries they'll take and if I can bring my theme build or not.

  • The new rules won't affect me much this year, as I will be in Open Unlimited once again. Passive MMTMM with active plate amp powered subs (no DSP).

Next year, if the rules stay the same, I plan to go down the DSP rabbit hole and create a time aligned "transient perfect" FIR filtered 3 way with 4th order slopes. I'm all set up with multiple amps, cables, 7.1 channel sound card, laptop, VCAD, EQ-APO, etc., to make it happen.

SDC registration appears to be open. Looks like 2 entries per person will be allowed, but only 2 winners per category will be chosen. And a new face on the judging panel this time around. Looking forward to it.

  • Main entry is repurpose of the 35L indy theme box with wavecor wf223bd01 or 02 and satori Be tweet, ferrite magnet (madi's holiday sale) in 6.75in round augerpro waveguide. Not sure wanna try the bigger elliptical waveguide. Hoping to wrap in Egg guy's Formica I snagged - will see. >300 large - get smoked by towers heh. Though in these listening events easy to end up with overwhelming bass from concrete slab floor bounce.

If second entry, maybe little 'bruised smurfs' (dark blue) with tang band w5 sub, tectonic 3.5 and peerless 3/4 tweet and 8" PR - squeaks in just under 300, 15L cab. Built these while back, did some initial xover and listening, leveraged some of John H's experience needing 1.3k ish notch and to ignore the on axis dip where flips from pistonic to radiating (?) as Ken R mentioned.

  • Not sure if I will have time to finish a 2nd entry. But if I do, it will be a modified version of my Indy theme entry with just a few mods to improve performance. 1) I'll add 220uF in series with the widebander PS95's to control cone motion below 60Hz or so. 2) I'll toss the cover so that everyone can see the "variovents" pulsating the denim up and down with bass transients (adding visual interest). 3) I'll add a lower cabinet extension to boost the W6-1139's sealed volume from 0.276 cu. ft. up to 0.50 cu.ft. This will lower Qtc from 0.689 down to 0.57, which will be more of a critically damped type alignment instead of a maximally flat type alignment.

  • I'm planning for Hancocks in "small over 300", and Pangolins for "large under 300". Pangolins will need a bit of a face-lift in terms of finish, but Hancocks are virtually done.

  • I'll be rooting for you all again this year. I'm definitely getting back into building a set... for next year.
