Seeking Narrow Dispersion Monitor Designs . . .

Preferably 3-way, compact near to midfeild use like 1m ~ 3m distance.
Horizontal/Vertical room reflections not permitted.

Are horns/waveguides the answer here?

TIA.

  • Horns typically have very wide dispersion. Not sure exactly what you are looking for, but I think you would be unhappy with a horn design.

    A design using a tweeter with a large radiating area (like the 30mm Wavecor or the Vifa XT25) will have narrow dispersion, just the laws of physics. Ribbons have very narrow vertical but extremely wide horizontal so I would avoid those, as well.

    Hmmmm . . . not at all what I expected but thankful for that perspective, JR.

    The issue is my room - it isn't symmetrical in shape nor L/R speaker FR due to the room reflections - dispersion is way too wide - especially with the DM7500 - would the DM7600 fare any better? (I have a pair - just haven't tried them).

    I could use the DA25TX00-08 as the tweet (w/ felt on the sides) albeit 1" but very good/flat FR . . .
    Yes, the suggested XT25SC90-04 has a good off-axis FR - nice roll off . . .

    Thanks!

  • The felt definitely helps with defraction but in my experience doesn't change the dispersion much, if at all. I think that's dictated more so by the driver's geometry.

  • A lot of ring radiator tweeters also have a narrow dispersion. XT25 being mentioned above fits the bill.

  • I guess this is what I should be emulating --> https://barefootsound.com/footprint01/

    A4Eaudio has the yellow monitors....

  • Here is where David left-off with his design - hoping to get narower below 1K than this if possible . . .

    I toed the midfield black 3 way towers-in a bunch more and the sound has balanced out better - had to turn down the tweets and mids so now I have more headroom for the bass in the Acoustas DSP amp. Sounds cleaner too.
    Need to break out the mic and re check the L/R speaker FR.
    Still looking for a nearfield monitor design in the 8.5" X 14" X (8 ~ 10" Deep) cabinet range (Got to fit in the existing equipment rack in place of the NS10M's.
