Get familiar with the reaction system: Introducing the Reaction System

The boy's gettin' some BASS!

edited March 9 in DIY

Our youngest has been eyeing my LAB 12s hanging in the storage room for years. Now that he has his own place, I thought it was time he had a decent HT/music system. I bought him a pair of the GRS 12SE-4HE subs for his birthday thinking it would be a good grownup father/son project. I've had 2 of the AudioSource plate amps on the shelf since he was a toddler and thought they would be perfect for the project. It's not a big house and I would worry about too much low end rattling the windows apart.

We cut all the basic panels yesterday and that gave me a chance to give him a little router tutorial. He's a mechanic and does some light machining at work, so he doesn't need much help, just a few pointers on possible ways to do things easier or safer. I showed how to build a quick jig out of scraps to cut the opening for the plate amp.

We started glue-up today. We should end up at about 1.5 cubic feet sealed with an F3 in the mid 30s. I have a spare miniDSP 2x4, so we have the option to do a little tweaking. Even without that, these should trounce the single Buy Out DCV 8" sub he's using right now.

  • That amp may have boost already.
    Nice project!

    I have a signature.
  • You can apply Linkwitz transforms with a MiniDSP.

  • I decided to try something different with the braces at the last minute. I used my biscuit jointer to cut some slots so the glue might have a little more surface area and not get squeezed out as we were sliding them down into place. Pictures probably say it better than I can describe it -

Since these are sealed, we used lots of glue. That also means we have to do some scraping before the Duratex.

You could call them "The Beer Budget Window Rattlers." I know someone that used that name for a pair of large DIY speakers that he built many, many years ago. B)

We got one running and plopped it on the floor in front of my main speakers. So far, so good. No air leaks that I can hear or feel. I do wish these amps had a variable phase control instead of the simple 0-180 degrees switch, but I think his HT receiver may have some more options. Sure can't complain much for a $50 driver!
