Rack 'em up - again!

I was pondering some kind of shelf/rack for my slowly growing LP collection during Christmas break. Work and other projects sidelined things for a bit, but Drew's LP storage project spurred me gather the parts I would need. I decided to build another 80/20 style unit, but this time the shelves will not be adjustable. Keeping costs a little lower than my first rack, I picked up some of the Acacia boards at Menards. I need at least a 16" depth for the amp and TT destined for this unit. No problem. I can edge glue these together and Bob's you uncle....or so I thought! I ripped one down and held it up to a board right out of the packaging only to find these panels are not straight or flat at all. They are wavy in every direction! So I resorted to the poor man's jointer - a straight, laminated shelf board and a pattern bit in the trim router. I spent way too long sanding the spots that didn't line up, even with a little persuasion from a mallet during glue-up. Not perfect, but good enough. I 3d printed some end caps for the 1010 aluminum and hope to be ready for finishing in the next few days.

  • Yay I'm not the only weirdo building furniture!

I just have no indoor shop space so I've been waiting for some warmer weather before I get sanding and finishing.

  • I'm not sure if mine are actually what you could call furniture. More like an Erector Set for adults. :p

  • I've got a long-planned media center to build. Finally then I can unpack my turntable.

But Chahly - Stahkist don't want speakers that look good, Stahkist wants speakers that sound good!
  • Progress is slow, but moving ahead bit by bit. I tapped both ends of the 12 extrusions. That was more time consuming than I remembered. I could have avoided this step for an extra $100, but I'm just too much of a cheapskate.

  • That WD40 is really good for cutting/tapping aluminum isn't it? (I use it on my lathe - cuts/shapes like frozen butter . . .

  • Yep - I'm sure I would have broken a tap if it hadn't been for the WD.

  • Try Anchor lube. It's water based and cleans up nicely.

This thing seems like it's taking forever to complete, but I'm trying to squeeze in an hour here and there.
I cut & tapped some pieces for the legs today. Table saw leaves pretty rough edges. Had to do the usual cleanup with some small files.

Time for a test fit - let's see if all the holes line up!
