Lab 12 sealed

There is absolutely nothing fancy about this but I am happy enough with it to post about it.

I recently acquired a free Eminence Lab 12 and dropped it in an existing box I had, 1.8ft3 sealed, with an sd300-6. (I was actually given two but one was dropped and the motor was knocked loose..)

The box doesn’t need to be that big but it was already built and works fine. Sub seems pretty flexible on sealed size.

Anyway it sounds great. Very strong solid bass. The sub driver is very mechanically quiet and musical.

I never used a Lab 12 before but always wanted to. It initially seems a little pricey for what is a technologically basic driver compared to the flood of very overbuilt and cheap subs from overseas nowadays, but it is US made and sounds great. It’s nice to see a competently engineered and well made product can be as good or better than the newest fanciest thing out there. Highly recommended.

  • Much of the market today is just about posting good numbers not sounding good. Somewhere between the great-looking numbers and the snake oil is good sound.

  • I have a Lab 12, never used, just sitting on my shelf. If you ever feel like adding a second one of those subs to your system hit me up and make an offer. Shipping might be an issue as those are heavy drivers

  • I have a pair of these too! Mine were rescued from a Lab Horn that our bass player's neighbor built out of MDF. He never used it after realizing how heavy and bulky the finished sub really it was.

  • LabHorns are honestly the cleanest most rattling subs I've experienced. They are just stupendously awesome. The LAB12 is such a versatile driver and can be used a lot of different ways. That sealed box with boost is likely a pretty robust combo.

  • I was going to build a pair of tapped horn subs for smaller venues, but the boys (& girl lead singer) in that band decided to go their separate ways.

  • This has always been a great driver. It’s just sometimes forgotten because something new and shiny comes out.

  • Comparatively it's not that expensive anymore. $250 has become kind of normal for a sub.

True, I just am seeing more and more capable budget subs out there like the GRS HE or Dayton MX.

The ultimax ii is priced lower, has a more exotic cone, larger coil, longer throw, larger power handling, dual spiders, shorting ring, blah blah blah. Maybe it is great maybe it isn’t but on paper sure looks fancy compared to the humble (albeit tried and true) Lab 12. All I know is the lab 12 sounds mighty nice. Too bad it may get overlooked by some based on “lesser” specs.

I’m disappointed I hadn’t had one before lol.

Thanks for the offer. I will keep it in mind. If I had two, I’d be tempted to run them as the bottom of a kickin 3-way!

  • Chuck did that with the Lab12C-4, and it was a great system.
