DIY Kits and starting out advice

Looking for advice on my next project. I have recently bought and built the Hi-Vi 3.1 speakers and really enjoy them and the process of building them. I am looking for a similar kit type project or a design of a similar or better sounding speaker. Any advice? Thanks in advance!

  • Scott (@ScottS) improved the Hi-Vi 3.1crossovers for a better sound: https://diy.midwestaudio.club/discussion/550/hivi-diy-3-1-revisited/p1. You could try modifying one speaker first and see how important the crossover is to overall sound.

I have read that post and is part of what brought me here looking for advice. I plan to up the crossover update soon but right now I am looking for my next speaker project idea.

  • I suggest you try the crossover mod first, before looking at building something else, you may be happy enough to build another pair with the mods: it certainly looks like good value.

A further project depends what you want from the new speakers: room, music preferences, WAF, budget etc.

Let us know those details and we can assist further.

  • New speakers would either be for a new listening room or to replace the rear speakers in my family room home theater. The room would ~200-250sqft, speakers can be anything from bookshelf to towers, music tends to be rock/alt. rock, WAF can be a factor...., and budget is less than $1000. I have a table saw, miter saw, router, etc.

I have recently built the Amp Camp Amp and I am also looking at building another DIY amp as well. I have several 3D printed speakers (Hexibase designs) I have been playing with in addition to the Hi-VI 3.1's. I have also wanted to build a Marty Sub or another DIY sub variant as well.

  • There are lots of great designers here that would share their projects. Craig's (PWRRYD) Keramiskas and a good sub would be a very high-value system. Bill's (4thtry) Flats are impressive and very unique. I think both of those use available drivers and would fit your budget.

I'd be interested in checking out either of those designs!

  • Yeah, the Totally Flats were really shockingly good sounding. Bill hit those out of the park.
Craig's Keramiskas had the right stuff from the get go. The genes of the drivers dictated proper treatment would make them completely awesome.

If i could recommend a project from LouC (RIP), the Cryolites were a project that should have received more love than they did. Be prepared to tweak a resistor on the tweeter, as the RS180 has received a redo since then. The BG Neo3 is NLA, so the GRS replacement would be required, and maybe need tweaked in level for that reason as well.

My second build was the Cryolites. I was so happy!

But Chahly - Stahkist don't want speakers that look good, Stahkist wants speakers that sound good!

If you get around to the crossover mod for the Hi-Vi's I would recommend either mod 5 or mod 6. I had mod 4 in my pair for a number of years, but mod 5 definitely smoothed things out further.

Where do I find details and instructions on mod 5 or 6? I don't think I found them in the original post: https://diy.midwestaudio.club/discussion/550/hivi-diy-3-1-revisited#latest

  • Yes, as Turn2 mentions, the schematics as well as simulations and commentary for mods 5 and 6 can be found at my web page.

I took apart one of my 3.1 speakers and confirmed I implemented mod 4 "perfectionist", I might leave it alone at this point. Thanks!
