SB21SDC-C000-4

I'm seriously considering using the SB21SDC-C000-4 when Spring hits. I will need to cross below 2K. With an Fs of 720 Hz. it should be doable but I have concerns.
Anyone have experience with this tweeter?
What are your thoughts?

  • I think you need to increase the Sd to make below 2kHz more easily doable. A 19-22mm is more suited to a 3kHz spot.

  • Have you thought about using them in a waveguide? I have these in an Augerpro 4" elliptical waveguide, but never measured them with the manufacturer's flat faceplate. It will probably be several weeks, but I could probably take them out of the speakers they are in and measure them with the factory faceplate if that would help your decision.

Yes I'll be using a WG. I should've mentioned that.

  • Seems domes with large surrounds don't do well in waveguides unless the throat is narrowed and elevated to partially shade the outer portions of the surround?

  • Not sure if it helps, as this is unique to the 4" waveguide, but here is horizontal directivity...

Below is not a dedicated distortion measurement, but this is from the on-axis measurement, about 86dB at 1 meter. Note, this is with my old EMM-6 mic which has high self-noise and is overstating distortion buy at least 5dB and probably closer to 10dB.

I intend to use a 6'' waveguide, 1'' thick. SB lists the SB21SDC-C000-4 with a large surround dome for increased acoustic output. My goal is to maintain the tweeter's stellar dispersion while lowering the crossover point without issues.

  • With the 4" WG, certainly looks like it will work with LR4 ~2KHz.
With the 6" WG, you will slightly more boost and perhaps play slightly lower. BUT, the tradeoff will be less wide dispersion at the top end (5-20KHz)

This is the trade-off with WGs.

If you want wide dispersion and low end ability, you need to optimize both the dome diameter, height AND baffle shape (front width/height, and depth "waveguide")

You haven't said what mid you are using...

  • Thanks for that.
It is a 7'' 2-way. Hence the WG. The woofer can carry up to 2.2k no sweat.
