Dayton Epique

What ever happened to the Dayton Epique drivers. They were quite popular for a while.

Comments

  • It seems like Dayton is all about volume sales these days.... Car subwoofers for instance.

But Chahly - Stahkist don't want speakers that look good, Stahkist wants speakers that sound good!
  • Don't know that anything "happened". AFAIK, they are still available and being used.

  • Not these or the 8" version. Epique E160CF

  • No, those were a limited run. PE came upon an auction of Accuton motors when they closed out a model or 2, and PE snapped them up for the older 6" and 8" CF drivers. However, the 2 newer woofers seem to be selling pretty well.

  • What happened to the esortic series? The tweeter had some issues, but the woofers seemed solid - more woofer / mid than subwoofer like the Epique and could go quite low, not as much xmax as the epique, but the midrange was better/more extended i guess?

  • Your knowledge of the speaker industry is impressive Wolf.

  • I just happen to know or did know some people, that's all.

I know Rory designed the Esoterics, but those ending availability seemed rather abrupt. They did seem like a very solid product and actually sold quite a few. Just all of a sudden, they were gone. Sorry, but I don't know that answer.

  • Thanks Ben, was wondering if there was someting worng or supply chain issues with the esoterics. The epique and esoterics seem to be different classes of drivers, not really a substitute or upgrade over the other.

  • SB shut down the Esoteric tweeter.

I think PE/Dayton took a deceptive marketing approach. The posted material certainly made me think they were designed by Dayton.
I just checked the Accuton site. It appears that PE/Dayton used the Accuton motor and basket.

Lots of companies use common components ...Here is a current Bold North woofer.... This basket is used in some Barefoot monitors too...

  • Almost all driver components are made overseas . . .

The esoterics were big coin for low sensitivity. That is where my interest stopped since I didn't realy know any better (Still don't).

The Esoterics were basically just Dynavox rebranded.

Correct, Pin-Dome was too close to a Dimple-dome by patent.

No, there was more to it than that. They were not just a rebadge. The coils were square profile wire just for example.

Interesting! I assumed they were knockoffs of Accutons not repurposed parts. That’s also interesting because I recall measurements in VC but haven’t ever seen any of echt Accuton/Thiel u. Partner.

As for the Esoterics, I thought they were really nice. They had bigger voicecoils for lower thermal compression, but better suspensions and more consistent build quality than Morel (and also avoided the moral complications related to that brand). I bought Vance’s ES180Ti test samples but their flanges ended up being just slightly too small for my intended use (on the baffle of a TAD/ Pioneer in-wall speaker) so I never bought the other 4 I would have needed and eventually sold that pair on.
