Hmmm? This thread has piqued my interest! Looking at all the drivers I have just sitting on my shelves collecting dust, and how cheap those Menards shelf boards are.... I might do some similar experimenting. I'll try it with way cheap drivers and go three way. Up firing Omni woofer, OB mid, and soft dome tweeter. Worse case I will waste < $15 worth of shelf board.

    ...not a softdome....but.... yeah.

  • Looks like some of Eric's work . . .

Made a 1.0cu.ft double walled 3/4” cabinet (40lbs.) for my rabbit hole adventure. Crazy how much the cabinet rings when the driver is turned around. This should cut back on that .

  • Coincidentally I was contemplating something like this using an 8" poly GRS. Not sure what tweeter I would use, however.

    I have a signature.
  • I'm buying some shelf boards on the way home tonight =)

  • If the cabinet rings when the driver is firing into it, shouldn't that be the exact same force as when the driver is firing outward?

But Chahly - Stahkist don't want speakers that look good, Stahkist wants speakers that sound good!

Lots of ideas investigate - maybe too many if you Google omni speakers. I think Bill is already half way there if he tips his side towers up on end and does something like this.

The motor structure might mitigate that to an extent. Should be more turbulent.

  • Well, there’s a reason why Walsh lined their cabinets with lead. I will post more of my findings that I found this morning on some experimental measurements I’ve done after I done going under the knife today.

  • I changed to simpler and cheaper design for measuring. Mac05 & Dayton ND28. The crossover was done on the fly which only took me about 20 minutes to get it to this point.

  • Graph looks amazingly good considering the setup looks like a diffraction nightmare.

Probably no worries about baffle step with this sort of thing?

  • There isn’t much baffle step in it. Low end bloat I think will be a problem and good clean midrange.

  • That dip at 1k is the baffle edge. When I turn the cabinet 90 degs that smooths out into 2 smaller dips.

  • Wait - under the knife?

  • Ahhh the old snip snip. Good luck!

    I have a signature.
  • All done. Took about 20 mins

  • That's not too bad, have a few uncomfortable days and good to go.

    I have a signature.

I hear a bag of frozen peas helps

  • Just don't go golf 18 holes tomorrow. A guy I worked with did that. Big Mistake! Couldn't walk for a week.

  • Yes frozen peas. Probably don’t open the bag tho.

  • All good. IBUPROFEN works great.

  • From the sounds of it the bag has already been opened. Oh you meant the bag of pees.

    This makes me think of:

When the moon is in the Seventh House
    And Jupiter aligns with Mars
Then peace will guide the planets
And love will steer the stars

I went down that road a few nights ago looking at all the google images. Since im inexperienced here im start simple.

  • This really gets me trying to contrast/ compare 2pi to 4pi of a ‘conventional’ speaker vs. dipole vs. bipolar in-room responses. Thinking the OHM style being an almost perfect bi-pole? Not to mention the unthinkable 901s…

  • On those duval speakers the only frequencies that are diffracted are those below the diameter of the ball. Which makes for an interesting xo

John H, btw forum has decided I don't get emails
  • When I did the MM 2" jobbies, I used a diffractive/absorptive mix that seemed to work pretty well. I used a stuffed whiffle ball style semisphere about the same diameter as the Sd calculation, placed fairly close to the cone. It seemed to load down to about 1k, which was beneficial.

I have some pickle balls and a large Styrofoam semisphere pair that I plan on experimenting with along these same lines.

  • More ridiculousness to come.
