On the Eminence woofers, the gaskets are usually proud of the frame around the rim. Using a box cutter razor knife around the rim can be easily regulated using the frame as a depth guide.
I tried attaching a blade to a washer stack to act as a holder/guide. The idea was that it would ride under the flange to help control the depth and angle. It worked for what I was trying to do (remove material) but didn't provide the control I was hoping for. The result looked pretty bad. I'm kicking around the idea of trying to remove the gasket entirely and possibly replace it with a trim ring that I can better control the shape of the edge and hopefully looks a bit more intentional.

Most of the paper ones peel away pretty easily, but don't be wanting to reuse them.
