I discovered Nanci Griffith back in the days of Betamax VCR's (1985) and had a tape I made of the first time I saw her on Austin City Limits. She was cute, funny, had a lovely voice and had Lyle Lovett singing backup vocals before I knew who Lyle Lovett was.

"...at the 5 and dime."
She was a great songwriter too.

I just discovered her music today. She is pretty amazing.
RIP Nanci...
She wrote a lot of songs, very prolific, but didn't necessarily record them.
Kathy Mattea recorded 'Love at the Five and Dime' as well, and is a more well known version. I really like the live recording Nanci did of the same, as she tells some of the story of where it all came from. I'm pretty sure this is the song that was written in one night where she won the songwriter's contest back in 1978.

There's a nice writeup in the Guardian about her influence and activism.
