I started reading up on the hobby in mid `00s but was just starting to build my woodworking skills at the time and couldn't afford much more than the tools to get started. Later, apartment life kept me from making sawdust.. so I delved into motorcycles instead. Around 7 years ago I couldn't hold back any longer and did my first speaker build. Unfortuantely, it feels like the 10 years I missed in between was the golden age of the hobby. Many who helped make it what it is today are no longer with us and I never got to meet them . I always seem to find myself in that situation. But here I am anyway.

Hey all,
I've had an account here for years and I read the forum pretty frequently, but I don't think I've ever posted anything. My name is Tim, and I live in Corpus Christi, TX, but grew up in the Cleveland Ohio area. I'm a software engineer by trade, but started being a stay at home dad this past February. I have 2 young sons and a daughter on the way, so my time for building speakers is pretty limited.
I've been dabbling in speaker building since around 2012 when I built my first set of Tritrix from a kit. Since then, I've built several other designs, both by other people and my own. Up to this point I've used a simple USB mic for my measurements. I'm hoping to get a 2-channel setup and step up my game before my next design. Hopefully I'll be able to come to one of the events some day and meet y'all in person 🙂
Hey Tim, old new guy here. Let me assure you that you have come to the right place and the right hobby. These guys are great, but sometimes you might have to pry information out of them, gently.
Sup! I'm in Illinois in Homer Glen a suburb just outside of Chicago. My dad and I did alot of car audio, loved HT and projectors and had big store-bought home theater speakers (cerwin vega PB50's, fischers etc). The Tritrix TL build was what really what got me into the DIY home audio stuff. I bought them on a not well known at the time website called PE and my Dad was like those aren't going to be good it's probably a scam. I remember we tested the crossovers/speakers outside of the box playing a few songs and just looked at each other like "whoa get these installed in the cabinet ASAP!" Those things were a killer bang for the buck build. I had a 7.1 setup with all Tritrix. I go by D1PP1N here and Mike220 on PETT. I used to post Lots of PIC HEAVY build threads on PETT. I've been around a bit from like 2009-2018 or so then took a long break into other hobbies. I've built a shitload of speakers designed by others and designed only a few with the hand holding and help of Craig (PWRRWD).
I also want to hop on the 2-channel bandwagon with virtuixcad. I just started to look into it. I have omnimic and dats but I need to do a few designs with excess speakers I have on hand. I feel like there are too many steps with the excel sheets and I always seem to mess up some setting or reverse/miss a step probably from not building stuff for years. I went down the usual rabbit hole I think everyone does of just wanted better and better sound/gear and ultimately I kept spending more and building bigger stuff. It didn't ever feel any of the gains were worth the extra spent on it. Now I seem to like all different builds and love when tiny stuff sounds like a bigger speaker.
It would be nice to have a small local get together. Not many people relate to our hobby. Sure, they like good sounding speakers but not to talk about them and why you have 10 pairs and how/why a Speaker/amp/DAC/preamp sounds differently than another.
I've been lurking for years, but decided I need to post so I can get an invite to the new site!
My name is Josh and was born and raised in Northern Michigan where I live with my wife and four children. I built my first speakers in 1995 and got serious about the hobby after I built our current house in 2012. I run my own renovations business and specialize in home theater and custom audio installations, though truthfully most of my business is vacation condo renovations. I've gotten to build dozens of my own designs for home theater and a few audio only installs.
I owe so much to this community for all the knowledge that you share that has given me the ability to learn, and even make some money from the joy of speaker design. Thank you for all the guides and tools that you provide for the community, and for sharing your designs that teach and inspire me and others!
I'm Curt and my request for membership was just granted today. I'm from West Des Moines, IA and my primary DIY interest is electronics. I've built two Pass designed ACA amps and an ACP+ preamp from DIY Audio.
Welcome to the board. I live just east of Des Moines and have partnered with Curt Campbell since early 2000 on several designs. Not all are listed. https://www.speakerdesignworks.com/
The Iowa DIY event will be held in Ankeny the weekend of October 18th. I hope to meet you in person there.

You've met more of them than you might realize.
Bumping this thread as we have approved several new members the last few weeks.

I drafted one and I think Ben may have gotten another. New recruits!
