‼️ CLOSING THIS FORUM & MOVING FORWARD

Due to certain software concerns with PHP and the future of Vanilla (the software that powers this forum), this forum will be closed permanently by the end of August 2025.

To be clear, it will remain here and operational, but in a browsable state only. You will not be able to log in, make posts, or view your private messages. All data I can expunge I will (e-mails, private messages, etc), and only the forum posts will remain. This will lock down and secure the site for the future, and minimize any effects of possible hacking.

At this time, a new Discourse-powered forum will be introduced, and an announcement post with a link to the new forum made as the final post on this site. I will also issue a 'Bulk Invite' to every forum member here who has earned veteran status and has been active in the last year.

This is all due to security concerns going forward, making us move to a modern forum software that is well-maintained.

Just to go over it once more: This forum will be closed and locked for use in a read-only state at the end of August 2025, and a new forum created on modern, currently maintained software.

Also at this time I will introduce a member-editable site: wiki.midwestaudio.club as well. This first addition to which will be downloads of venerable Excel worksheets (which most of us know well) created by Jeff Bagby. I'll continue to expand the wiki from there, and I hope others will help me build a repository of speaker-building knowledge accessible to all. I'm talking about detailing stuff like Hoffmann's Iron Law, basic concepts for enclosures, and so on. Also, I envision it as a place to record designs for those who wish to share them.

Feel free to discuss below in the comments, and I welcome any questions.

With the basic collapse of PE Tech Talk, and thus the related Project Gallery becoming mostly irrelevant, a nice dedicated area at MAC to completed designs would be a great resource.

  • Thanks for giving serious consideration to cyber security.

But Chahly - Stahkist don't want speakers that look good, Stahkist wants speakers that sound good!
  • I for one welcome our newer more up to date forum overlord.
Thanks Jason, for all this current and past efforts in keeping the form running smoothly.

  • Yes, thank you muchly

  • Thank you, Jason, for keeping our discussion space clean and spam free.

    Nicholas_23
  • Absolutely, it's been a fantastic forum thus far, looking forward to the next chapter.

  • Dang! But thank you for looking out for us Jason. I haven't been here in awhile but it is still my favorite (read only) speaker forum that I would divest in.

  • This sounds like a great move and update. Bad things happen once your forum is totally hacked and out of control! Looking forward to seeing what comes about.

  • Many thanks Jason for keeping this forum between the ditches - unlike many others.

Keep an open mind, but don't let your brain fall out.

  • Thanks, Jason. Look forward to using the new site. Since we will not abe able to log into the old forum, I take it that my personal bookmark listing will no longer be available. I currently maintain a long list of bookmarks because this makes it much easier for me to find stuff from old threads. So, going forward, my plan will be to print out a hard copy of my current bookmark listing before the forum is permanently shut down. Then, when I need to look something up in a old thread, I can simply reference my printed copy to quickly search and find the old archived thread. Does this make sense?

  • Thanks for all your work Jason.

Yes, that will work. You could also simply copy the links into a word/text document on the computer, and if you saved it as a PDF you will likely have clickable links.

Done. Just saved my bookmark page as a PDF with clickable links and it works perfectly!! Thanks for the tip! :+1:

Try saving the the links file as an HTML format.
Then you can open it in your browser, click the links and also bookmark the file in your browser under "MWAC old site links".

  • A job well done. Thanks Jason.

  • Been primarily lurking for a while, but I want to thank you Jason for all you do to keep this forum up and running. I'm looking forward to the new iteration.

  • Tip of the hat to you, Jason. The guys behind the curtain who keep the show running rarely get the credit they deserve.

  • Thanks Jason.
We certainly appreciate your time and efforts

  • Nice to come back and have a real audio board. Thank you!

  • To ensure I make the migration. :)

  • Hey admins - will we be able to download the private messages, or will they be available as is on the new forum?

But Chahly - Stahkist don't want speakers that look good, Stahkist wants speakers that sound good!
  • I believe all that will be gone. About the download dunno - currently don't see an option to download

    From the first post:

@JasonP on question of downloading private messages

  • I'm kinda late to the party but I want to also thank you Jason. This is the first place I go every morning to see what everyone is up to and new projects. I have no idea what it took from your end to make this site so functionally operationable and clean but thank you for that again. And let nobody forget to send out a huge thank you to JR. He has personally paid for this site for years and I don't imagine that the contributions in the donation pumpkin at DIY Iowa or the MAC driver sales profits come even close to fully compensating his personal expense. Thank you my good friend JR!

    rjj45Steve_Leeugly_wooferTurn2GeoffMillar
  • While I welcome the compliment, the cost of this forum is born by JP. The pumpkin helps.

    PWRRYDSteve_Lee
    I have a signature.
  • I appreciate all the thanks, and while JR isn't incorrect about the site cost, the pumpkin does indeed help. I'd also be remiss not to point out that the Midwest Audio Club would not be what it is today without all three of us: JR, Bryan, and me putting in effort for the love of the hobby.

Ani is right above; all the private messages will be gone, and even if they were not, you would not be able to log in to see them anymore. Make sure you save anything important from them before the closure date.

Speaking of the actual closure date: I'm pushing that back to Saturday, September 6th, as the 1st of the month is a holiday.

Well crap, if I never make it to Iowa is there another way to directly contribute? IDK that I can do it now because of immediate circumstances, but I'd like to in the future when that changes.

We did plan on putting a small PayPal donate button on the site at some point, but just never did. Perhaps we'll make that happen on the new site.

  • ^ Please do, Jason - I have had the desire to contribute monetarily for quite a while but wasn't sure who/how to broach the subject.

I haven't seen any emails yet. I live in fear of not being cool enough for the rapture. Everything still to plan?

Also, I'd absolutely throw a few nickels at a PayPal. Regardless of my coolness.

Or heck, a Patreon. I'd give $3-5/mo in perpetuity.
