Cabinet-makers in Chicago - any recs?

edited July 8 in DIY

Hey everyone,

Does anyone have a rec for a woodworking shop in Chicago that isn't afraid of speakers? Even if I had the time (which I don't) my construction skill level is strictly at the below-average grade so need to engage a competent professional..

Long story short, we recently bought a new house, and I wanted two "fake cabinet" subwoofers built and hung in the top-front corners of the room, using a pair of BMS 18n850's I bought from Paul Wright when he was moving and tearing down his old "Octagon" home theater. It's wasted space as is and it would be nice to get two of the 4 or 5 subs off the floor to better randomize modal excitation. I'm not looking for anything too-fancy: paint grade ply with fake doors in front so they look like hanging cabinets, and I was thinking mount them to the wall using French cleats with some damping material between the halves of the cleat to minimize vibration transfer to the walls.

Unfortunately, I learned last week that the cabinet maker who Perry Marshall recommended to me a while ago (Seth built Perry's speakers including the "Bitches Brew") and who did a stellar job on a built-in in our current house, has moved to a new profession. So back to the proverbial drawing board.

  • Seth is a heck of a good woodworker, wonder why the change? He also built Carmody's Speedsters, Bagby's Spirit Winds, and a set of towers for CraigK. There are more he self built like the Lightning, etc.

  • PM Jerzy53 on this forum, he's a cabinet maker by trade. He's in Franklin park.

    Sometimes people just branch out.

    I have a signature.

Agree Seth is excellent at the craft, and great to deal with. He also bent over backwards to tap into his network to find someone to help me out, but alas everyone he knows was at capacity.

Don't want to get into any details shared with me but he's continuing to be involved with music.

  • I have been known to cnc flat packs =)

I'll keep that in mind for the future, but not for this.
