1001 reasons not to, but intriguing…

edited May 11 in DIY

My last run at a build (my new product thread) has been set aside for now. Good, but not necessarily better or unique.

So I’m open to trying something different. That said, these upward/ top baffles designs I’ve always found interesting from a design/ room filling perspective. As stated, I can think of many reasons not to, but could be a fun project. Any builds / suggestions ???

A fairly good review here:

  • I think it's a fun idea. Really good learning experience for something different.

  • Do it, they are interesting. Someone brought something like that to Indy years ago and I thought it showed promise, but was very dependent on where you were in the room.

    I have a signature.
  • Marvin's Ohm speakers are pretty cool as well with the down firing woofer and cross angled tweeters

  • Looking at significant off angle responses (I have a hard enough time matching up tw and mid at 15 degrees off measurements) is concerning, but I’ll have to admit reflected, somewhat non-direct sound as room / background music (dare I say 901s here) while not best for critical listening can be enjoyable. The review I posted of the top speaker was surprisingly detailed and overall positive.

  • Sonab omni directional speakers were popular here (Oz) in the 80s, but they needed a particular room size/dimensions and a custom Sonab amplifier to perform their best. IIRC they had two tweeters and a mid.

I only heard them in a hi fi store and quite liked the sound, but not the price.

Here's a sort of modern equivalent:

Thx for the reference and link. I don’t know if I’ll go down that road for a build, but the pencil to paper juices are flowing. Even bose had a doable model. I even have 4 small tectonics that may come into play (and off the shelf).

@Hifiside was experimenting with Ohm Walsh style, but not sure where that lead.

  • These are the same model I bought in 1997ish as my first real set of speakers, later paired with a kenwood vr306 receiver. Sold them a few years ago for the same price I paid new. They were lots of fun. They were intended to be on their side with one tweeter facing the rear wall one tweeter facing the listener.

  • Bose 601's

  • Passive or Active?

  • I've been a long-time fan of employing both. Passive for the mid-top (generally mid/tw) and active btwn bass and mid-top. Gives me a ton of freedom in managing the bass around the mid-top which I find as key- the mids. Makes traveling to shows a pain in the rear, but...

  • I know I’m going to set a new (low) bar for an initial fast go, as I’m needing to enclose the small tectonics in some sort of sealed boxes and attach / place them around a woofer (from a previous build set on its side) angling one towards listening position and the other to reflect off sidewall / ceiling back towards listening area. Pics to hopefully follow tomorrow- lets just say its nacho going to be exemplary.

But kudos to Pepsi, those mini’s are darn good.

Darn, I wasn't far off. Hey, it's easy and gets us there.

  • I have been known to put mids in steel coffee cans in the past - nothing wrong with your "test cabinet" idea.

I did a quickie setup, eq’d the drivers as measured from ~listening position direction. LR2nd order 600Hz. Actually not a bad looking result. Stand up and it’s of course a whole different picture (eq’d had ‘managed’ the steep off-axis of the upward facing woofer).

Listening impressions / conclusions. Those little tectonics play bigger than they look. I do like listening to music with direct sound (front left / right mains) with a tad of room fill. My std set-up I have an A/V preamp set as a 2+2, with the rear/ceiling speakers playing very, very softly, so not a surprise that I didn’t mind this duct-tape speaker test. I’d probably pass on such an unconventional layout, but adding a broad-ranger such as these tectonics upward and out the back / side (room dependent) is worth considering.

Edit: Listening to these for a bit, surprisingly clear and focused center image. Guess the delay of the reflection driver (wall/ceiling back to listening position) doesn’t interfere with first direct sound. If I wasn’t going to pull the woofers for my next build these would make a fun Iowa show speaker.
